As I sit here writing in January 2025, I remark that it is a historic month for Presidents.
On January 6, 2025, Vice President Kamala Harris officiated the counting of electoral ballots from the November election. This marked the peaceful transfer of power, certifying Donald Trump and JD Vance as the next President and Vice President. The dignity and honor of this ceremonial event stand in sharp contrast to the riotous events that occurred on January 6, 2021.
On January 7, 2025, Jimmy Carter, our 39th President, after 100 years of service to our country, was laid in state in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. The ceremony was solemn and historic; his coffin was moved down Pennsylvania Avenue on a horse-drawn caisson that was used for President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral. American citizens honored his legacy for the following two days.
On January 9, 2025, during the funeral of Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, we learned more about the impactful life led by Jimmy Carter from testimonies of his grandchildren, his Vice President, his opponent during his run for a second term, and the current President. Not only did he broker peace between Israel and Egypt, he also eradicated the scourge of guinea worm disease in water by simply educating women in African villages to collect water differently.
On January 10, 2025, our president-elect was sentenced for felonies he commited before his 2016 presidential election. On January 20, 2025, our next President of the United States was inaugurated to oversee the executive branch of our government and to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. He has been left an enviable economy built by President Joe Biden whose economic policies lowered unemployment, brought manufacturing back to the USA, and built up the infrastructure in our communities. May the policies of the new administration continue to enhance the prosperity and health of Americans.
During Trump’s administration, the United States will celebrate our 250 year anniversary since becoming a nation governed by the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. May God help us to continue to be one nation for the people, of the people, by the people.
