Independence Day

To protest taxation without representation, on July 4, 1776, 56 representatives from 13 colonies to the Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence of the United States, announcing the colonies separation from British rule. They declared that “all men are created equal, endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” and that “Government powers are derived from the consent of the governed, to effect their safety and happiness.”

For 8 years, from 1775 to 1783, George Washington and colonists fought the British to secure our independence from Britain.

In 1870 and 1938, Congress passed laws to create a National Holiday to celebrate “the joy of freedom” on July 4th, Independence Day. Today, we celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, parades, picnics, concerts, and baseball.

To maintain our rights and freedom, it is important that we all vote.  As Florida has passed new voting laws, please ensure that you are still registered to vote. These are important deadlines for the 2022 Elections in Florida.
