Independence Day

On July 4, 1776, to protest taxation without representation, 56 representatives to the Continental Congress from 13 colonies ratified the Declaration of Independence of the United States, announcing the American colonies separation from British rule. They declared that “all men are created equal, endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” and that “Government powers are derived from the consent of the governed, to effect their safety and happiness.”  For 8 years, from 1775 to 1783, George Washington and the Amerian colonists fought the British to secure our independence from being ruled by a King of England.

In 1870 and 1938, Congress passed laws to create a National Holiday to celebrate “the joy of freedom” on July 4th, Independence Day. Today, we celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, parades, picnics, concerts, and baseball. Let’s remember why we became an independent nation, governed by The United States Constituiton and the ‘rule of law’.

To maintain our democratic values, rights, and freedom, it is important that we all vote.
