Know Where You Get Your News

Fake news stories have been getting a lot of attention lately due to their prominence online and on social media. They often spread like a viral wildfire when their dramatic, shocking headlines are shared by readers. Fake news stories can turn into conspiracy theories that take on a life of their own. Fake news is another type of scam and can have damaging consequences to people and our society.

The stories can look as if they come from legitimate news organizations. If you are not familiar with the organization that produced the story, look it up. Look up the author and check for real sources, to be sure the story is not some kind of joke. Take these steps before sharing any fake news stories further.
