The United States of America was founded on the principle that We the People deserve to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that government derives its power from the consent of the governed.

The authors of the Declaration of Independence mutually pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to be free and independent of being ruled by Great Britain. George Washington, and his ragtag band of patriot soldiers fought hard to be free and independent from an allegiance to the tyrannical King of Great Britain who did not honor the basic human rights of colonists: to worship, trade, and be included in decisions such as taxation.

The United States Constitution is the world’s longest surviving written charter of government. Its first three words “We the People” affirm that the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens. The Constitution outlines the balance of government powers (executive, legislative and judicial), to safeguard the interests of majority, rule and minority rights of liberty and equality, and the roles of federal and state governments. It is a living document, having been amended twenty-seven times. Its first ten amendments are our Bill of Rights.

2024 is a year of Federal, State and Local elections. Primaries determine who will be on the ballots in November. It is important that We the People exercise our right to vote for the best elected officials to represent us.

Many States, Florida included, have passed laws to make it harder for citizens to vote – fewer polling locations, eligible voters purged from voting rolls, mail-in ballot rules changed. Many of these changes make it harder for senior citizens to vote. Make sure you are registered and vote to elect people who will uphold our democratic principles and the Constitution.

Presidents Day is a good time to reflect on and be thankful for our forefathers who fought for and created our United States of America and our democratic form of governing for We the People.
