You can change your privacy settings in Facebook and other social media sites to restrict who can see your posts. If you leave your privacy settings on public, anyone in the world can see the status you post and the photos you share. To ensure that only the people you trust can see your posts, change your privacy settings so that only the friends you have connected with can see what you share online.
Why you should care?
- l When your posts are public, scammers create fake Facebook accounts in your name with your photo, in an attempt to capture your Facebook friends to their fake account.
- l “Granny scammers” use your profile and posts about your grand kids names to pull off their lucrative scams.
- l Be careful not to post your phone number on social media, to cut down on scammers calling you.
- l Choose your Facebook friends carefully. Look at profiles first before accepting friends requests. If there is only a picture, a birthday, and no recent posts, that Facebook account is probably hacked and the scammer is trying to access your Facebook friends list. You can report the suspicious account and Facebook will research and delete the fake account.
I know that many grandparents have Facebook accounts to stay connected with their family and grand kids. I want you to stay safe online and protected from scammers and hackers.
