It may seem as if your computer is always doing updates! Keeping your Windows operating system updated is important to keep your computer running smoothly and securely.
- Weekly updates – Microsoft fixes bugs and other issues that can cause your computer to crash and run more slowly.
- Once a year – Microsoft releases new feature and enhancement releases.
- Microsoft also improves security by providing protection against potential security vulnerabilities and malware.
- You can tell your version of Windows by clicking SETTINGS / Windows Updates / History.
It is important to keep Windows updated to ensure that you have the latest protection and features. Additionally, many software programs, browsers, applications and websites require the latest supported version of Windows in order to function properly. Installing Windows updates can help prevent compatibility issues.
When should you upgrade your Windows Operating System?
- Pre-Windows 10: If your operating system is XP, Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, it is time to consider buying a new computer. Yours may be between 12 and 22 years old!
- Windows 10 was released in July 2015. Mainstream (new features and bug fixes) support ended in May 2020. Windows 10 extended support (security updates only) ends in October 2025 (2 years after the last Windows 10 major release 23H2 released in 10/2023). After that time, your operating system will no longer receive security updates or technical support.
- Upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11: Many computers are now offering the ability to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 at no extra charge. If your current setup on Windows 10 meets your needs, and you prefer to avoid change, you can safely continue using it until the end of support in October, 2025.
- Windows 11 is stable, released in October 2021 with 3 major feature releases. Each feature release is supported for 2 years: 21H2 (support ended), 22H2 (support ends 10/2024) , 23H2 (support ends 10/2025) and 24H2 (supported until 10/2026) is expected this October). If your computer hardware supports Windows 11, you can upgrade to this newest version.
- Windows 11 Benefits: A more streamlined interface, better security than Windows 10, and updated Apps, such as CoPilot AI, information widgets (news, weather, calendar from your taskbar), improved voice typing, and touchscreen optimization. The learning curve is not significant, because the components of Windows look familiar.
New computers come with Windows 11 installed; you have no choice. If your computer hardware does not support Windows 11 and runs slow or poorly, then consider buying a new computer. Trust me, it will be faster.
