As you prepare to travel, you may want to take along your laptop, tablet or smart phone in order to stay connected. When traveling, you want to protect your devices from theft and damage and have them functional for use when you arrive at your destination. Many airports have power outlets where you can charge your devices while traveling.
This checklist has some things to remember to do when traveling:
- l Cords: Pack the charging cords for all your devices. There is nothing worse than discovering that you left a cord behind!
- l Security Cable: Invest in a security cable to securely lock down your laptop from theft when you are out of your hotel or cruise ship room. (cost $20) Alternatively, lock in the room safe, if your laptop will fit.
- l Backup: Back up your laptop files to an external USB hard drive or flash drive and put the backup device in a safe place.
- l Passwords: Pack your list of passwords, so you can get into your favorite websites.
- l Travel cases: Pack your devices in a cushioned laptop travel case, to protect them from bumps and bangs. And carry it with you. (cost $35)
- l VPN: Consider subscribing to a VPN service to give you secure Wi-Fi. You don’t want to be doing your on-line banking on an open, insecure Wi-Fi connection.
- l Photos of devices: With your smart phone, take a photo of the devices you are traveling with, including the serial number on the back of the device.
- l Take or secure: Carry your smart phone and tablet with you when sightseeing. They are great for taking photos and memories of your trip. If you don’t want to carry the tablet, lock it in the hotel safe.
- l Airplane mode: When on an airplane, turn on airplane mode and turn off Wi-Fi on your device. This prevents interference with cockpit devices and saves your battery by not constantly scanning for a cell tower signal while flying over the country. Turn off airplane mode when you land to use your phone.
- l International plans: If traveling internationally, add flat-rate international calling / data service to your cell phone service to avoid costly roaming charges.
