TRAVELING WITH YOUR LAPTOP AND ELECTRONICS

TRAVELING WITH YOUR LAPTOP AND ELECTRONICS

Summer is the time when many people travel on vacations.  In order to stay connected, you may want to take along your laptop, tablet or smart phone. When you travel, you want to protect your devices from theft and damage and have them functional for use when you arrive at your destination.  Many airports have power outlets where you can charge your devices while traveling.

This checklist has some things you want to remember to bring with you:

  • Pack the charging cords for all your devices.  There is nothing worse than discovering that you left a cord at home!
  • Invest in a security cable to securely lock down your laptop from theft when you are out of your hotel or cruise ship room. (cost $20)
  • Back up your laptop files to an external USB hard drive or flash drive and put the backup device in a safe place.
  • Pack your list of passwords, so you can get into your favorite websites.
  • Pack your devices in a cushioned laptop travel case, to protect them from bumps and bangs. And carry it with you. (cost $35)
  • Consider subscribing to a VPN service to give you secure Wi-Fi.  You don’t want to be doing your on-line banking on an open, unsecure Wi-Fi connection.
  • With your smart phone, take a photo of the devices you are traveling with, including the serial number on the back of the device.
  • Carry your smart phone and tablet with you when sightseeing.  They are great for taking photos and memories of your trip.  If you don’t want to carry the tablet, lock it in the hotel safe.
