The Constitution of the United States codifies our rights as citizens of the USA – men and women, young and old, white and persons of color. You may download a copy here: https://constitutionus.com/books/us_constitution_pdf/ It is a living document, having been amended 27 times since 1795. Our Constitution is the basis of our rule of law and the framework of our democratic republic. When they take office, our elected and appointed officials and military service personnel swear an oath to uphold the Constitution from enemies external and internal.
Voting rights and procedures have been codified in the Constitution and Amendments.
– the abolishment of slavery (1865) (13)
– the right of Congress to remove government representatives who do not uphold the constitution (1868) (14.3)
– the rights to vote — citizens (1870) (15); women (1920) (19); 18-year-olds (1971) (26)
The peaceful transfer of power is expected after elections. Voting is a right and a privilege, giving “we the people” a voice in who represents us at all levels of government and what their policies are.
No matter what your political party affiliation is, it is important that you vote. Request a mail-in ballot before August 3rd and mail it in to arrive by August 16th
For the general ‘midterm’ election ending on November 8th, check your registration before October 1st, and request your mail-in ballot before October 29th. Research candidates, set your criteria and be sure to vote.
