There was a storm outside. The power surged on and off several times in quick succession.
Problem: When you turned on your computer, it would not boot up to Windows. Perhaps you only saw a black screen. You panic! Your files are not backed up. Do you need an expensive new computer?
Solution: Most likely, the power surge caused something in the circuitry of the computer to build up static electricity that needs to be cleared. Here’s what to do:
- 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the computer.
- 2. Unplug all of the other cords and cables from the computer (remembering where they go).
- 3. Press the power button for a count of 30 (nothing will show because there is no power).
- 4. Plug the other cords and cables back in.
- 5. Plug the power cord back in.
- 6. Turn on the computer with the power button.
Most likely, the computer will boot up to Windows. This would be a good time to back up your files.
Prevention: If your computer is a laptop, just unplug it during a lightning storm. If the computer is a tower, it is recommended to invest in a batter backup uninterrupted power supply (UPS) that will ride through power surges and keep your computer protected.
