A Simple Guide to Using Zoom: How to Install It and Join a Meeting

Zoom has become one of the easiest ways to stay connected by video — whether you’re joining a class, attending a workshop, or chatting with family. But for many seniors, the steps can feel confusing at first. The good news is that once you learn the basics, Zoom becomes simple and comfortable to use.

This guide walks you through how to install Zoom on your device and how to join a meeting, step by step.

Using Zoom on a Computer (Windows or Mac)

If you are using a Windows or Mac computer, start by installing Zoom from the official Zoom download page.

Step 1: Install Zoom

Open your web browser, such as Edge, Chrome, or Safari.

Once the Zoom icon appears, you are ready to join a meeting.

Step 2: Open Zoom

Double-click the Zoom icon. Then click Join a Meeting — you do not need to sign in.

Step 3: Enter the Meeting Details

Your meeting host will provide the details you need to join.

Meeting ID and Passcode

Enter the meeting information carefully.

If the meeting information is correct, Zoom will bring you into the meeting room.

Step 4: Turn On Audio and Video

Zoom may ask about sound and camera settings when you enter.

You can join with audio only if you do not want your camera on.

Using Zoom on a Smartphone or Tablet

The steps are similar on an iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or Android tablet.

Once the app is installed, you can join meetings from the Zoom app.

Join a Meeting on a Phone or Tablet

Tap the Zoom app, tap Join a Meeting, enter the Meeting ID and Passcode, then tap Join.

Allow Audio and Video

Your phone or tablet may ask permission to use the camera and microphone.

These permissions allow Zoom to work like a normal video call.

Helpful Zoom Tips

A few habits make Zoom easier and more comfortable.

With a little practice, Zoom becomes much less intimidating.
