Too Many Emails?
A Guide to Cleaning Up Your Inbox
Many of my clients have thousands of unread emails in their inboxes! This is distracting, leading to rereading the same emails multiple times, making it unclear what is important and what is not. Besides that, your email service may limit how many emails you can store and display. Once you reach a limit, you can no longer receive or send emails.
The thing to do is to reduce the number of incoming emails landing in your Inbox. Try these tips:
- If you do not recognize the sender, mark the email as SPAM or JUNK. You just told your email service to deliver future emails from this sender to the SPAM / JUNK folder, rather than your INBOX.
- If the email is from a legitimate business, but you are no longer interested, click the UNSUBSCRIBE link. You have just told the sender to remove you from their automated email list.
- If the email is a scam or phishing email, BLOCK the sender. You have just told your email service to trash messages from this sender in the future.
- Sorting your email by FROM allows you to see who is sending lots of emails every day. Handle one of them by method 1), 2), or 3) above, then delete the rest from this sender all at once. When you are done, remember to sort your email by date (most recent date first).
Cleaning up your INBOX is one of the ways to improve your productivity and make your computer easier to use.
