CLOUD PROBLEMS?
Or Phishing Emails?

I see many scams that are plaguing my clients. The most frequent scam these days is “phishing” emails that alert you about a “cloud” storage problem. The scammer may claim: you are out of cloud space; your credit card expired; there is a security problem; you need to pay now. The consequences of not taking urgent action would mean the loss of all your data that is stored in the cloud!

This type of email is almost always “phishing” for your identity or your money by scaring you to take immediate action. The email seems to be from a cloud service (Which one? Is it yours?) You can tell more about who sent the email by hovering your mouse over the sender’s name. If you don’t recognize the sender, mark the email as SPAM or JUNK and delete it.

You may receive many of these “cloud” warning email messages; they all appear similar. This is because a scammer who successfully ran this scam, packaged it up and sold it as a “scam in a box” to other scammers!

Now that you know it’s a scam, don’t fall for it. Don’t call or click any links in the email. Don’t give the scammer the sign in credentials to your cloud storage. Don’t pay them. These “cloud” emails are a phishing scam.

This kind of scam can feel very scary; you are not sure whether to trust if it’s real or not! You need to feel safe and secure when you are using your computer, not be surprised by emails claiming that your cloud has a problem or that an anti-virus just charged a lot of money to your credit card.
